Working with Indigenous Cultural Material in the Waldorf School Setting

Waldorf Development Conference

Friday and Saturday, November 9-10th, 2018

Keynote Speaker:  Dale Saddleback

With the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada of 2015 (TRC), Canadians entered into a national dialogue on their relationship with Indigenous peoples.

The TRC hopes to guide and inspire Indigenous peoples and Canadians in a process of reconciliation and renewed relationships that are based on mutual understanding and respect.

Waldorf education in Canada has embraced this movement. Many Waldorf teachers wish to cultivate relationships with Indigenous peoples and infuse their culture into the Waldorf school setting and curriculum. The following questions are often raised:

What is cultural appropriation versus cultural acceptance?

How to choose material and present it?

How to develop relationships with Indigenous communities?

This conference will address these questions. Indigenous Waldorf teachers will facilitate the five working groups.

Dale Saddleback (photo at left) is nehiyaw (Cree) from the Pigeon Lake Indian Reserve in Alberta.

After time as a dancer and singer, he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, followed by a master’s degree in Educational Policy Studies, both at the University of Alberta.

His master’s capping paper entitled “Giving Modern Youth More Access to Elders”, underlines the role Waldorf education could play in Indigenous education reform aligned with nehiyaw culture and values.

He is presently a Ph.D. student at the University of Alberta, studying Indigenous Waldorf education. Dale is also a founding director of the Douglas Cardinal Foundation for Indigenous Waldorf Education.

Who is it for? While these conferences have traditionally been for Waldorf teachers, this year we would like to open up the development conference also to parents, and friends of Waldorf schools, and to educators working in other school systems and to any other individuals who may be interested in the topics we will be addressing.
